Farmhouse King Bed

It was something we talked about numerous times, but this time we were serious. I formulated a plan and fired up Sketchup. I really love that program. You can customize everything to your own needs and specifications. Our bedroom was in need of a remodel. For the longest time our California King mattress was on the floor. My wife picked a design and a color and I started on a journey that I never took before. Thankfully Sketchup took most of the guess work out. I went to HomeDepot and purchased the wood. I will say that the wood was really bad. It was not square and the quality was low. I got some 1×6 common boards and the rest was multiple dimensions of pine lumber. The upcoming Nightstand project will feature poplar hardwood at least. Slowly I’ll be getting more into quality wood. But when your starting out it’s best to practice with cheap wood.

On that note, I considered dowels or mortise and tenon, but I figured for my first project I’d play it safe there too. I purchased the Kreg HD Jig and a bunch of HD screws. I also used regular Kreg screws at 1¼ inches due to the common pine boards being 3/4″. Being that I’m a busy dad, it took me roughly 3 weeks to finish. That is pretty good considering how much sanding and how long the curing of each coat of stain and poly took. The bed hardware was my favorite part of the build. I don’t know why, I just considered that part somewhat of a challenge. I used the Bosch 1617EVSPK with the RA1054 router guide. I recessed the bed hardware 1/32″ below the surface of the wood for a tighter fit. I would say that part I was nervous about. But the project was a success! Stay tuned for a couple of nightstands. I’m using Poplar wood drawers with half blind dove tails! Stay tuned!

After completing the farmhouse king bed project, we wanted to continue the momentum and start the nightstand project. We fired up Sketchup and started a design my wife liked. Like all woodworking shops there is a dust issue. I eventually purchased a shopvac and shortly after a Dust Deputy by Oneida Systems.
